Pumpkin patch!
Emmelyn met her Grandpa Rob and Grandma Wendy this weekend, who visited from Stillwater. Salt Lake got its first snowfall, which made things chilly. But we did squeeze a trip to the pumpkin patch in.

Emmelyn --10 weeks old
Emmelyn gets to meet her Grandpa Rob and Grandma Wendy this weekend, who are flying into town from Stillwater, Minn. We plan to check out a pumpkin patch, if weather permits and go on a short hike. It should be a nice weekend! In the meantime, here are some cute photos of Emmelyn from this week. She gouged her cheek with her fingernail one day, which meant mom finally had to figure out how to cut her nails (I've gotten by with them just breaking off and not being much of a menace until this week). Hopefully I'll become a better nail trimmer in the future!
Her hair also continues to thin out and by the looks of it, she will not be getting her dad's dark hair as we though when she was born, but is looking more blonde like mom every day.
Bumbo fun
Emmelyn's head control has really seemed to progress in the last week or so. She's getting so strong, and lifts her head up during tummy time on her play gyms. We thought we'd see how she did in her Bumbo chair. She doesn't quite know what she thinks yet and probably needs to grow and get stronger a couple more weeks before she is ready to use it. She seemed to like it, but by the time I got out the camera to make a video, she was getting tired (I feel like kind of a bad mother for showing this video, when her head flops and she spits up at the end). But I promise she didn't get hurt. :-) We think she's having a growth spurt because she's been really hungry, a bit more fussy than she usually is and has been sleeping more. She is growing, growing and growing! I was telling her Grandma Sue that I think she will be out of 3-month clothes by the time we visit for Thanksgiving next month.

The many faces of Emmelyn
Emmelyn's mood can change on a dime ... and it is pretty entertaining to watch her many, many faces. Speaking of which, I finally got birth announcments in the mail over the weekend. So keep an eye out in your mailbox for a cute photo with Em making one of her darling newborn faces. :-)
Emmelyn's 9th week
We had a quiet week, with time spent getting organized as the days tick down until I go back to work. That reality kind of sunk in today, when I looked at my work e-mail and there were a bunch of press releases for courts assignments that will be my responsiblity when I get back! Ah! Where did 12 weeks go?
I'll be taking over the federal courts/federal agencies beat when I go back to work, which is a bit of a change from what I've been doing for 3 years. The hours will be somewhat less erratic than straight up crime reporting, although I may get pulled back into that when a big story hits. So I get the best of both the courts and crime worlds.
We are also starting to research homes, with hopes that we'll be able to sell our townhouse this spring. There is good and bad to this market --the good being that houses we couldn't afford three years ago are now in our price range. The bad being that we need to sell our townhouse in order to do that, and it could be tough to sell in this market. We had planned to stay in this house 3 to 5 years, so we're just going to see what happens when we're ready to put it on the market (it will be three years in February). We've been checking out open houses to get ideas about what we might want/what we can get for our money right now and plan to meet with our realtor, too. Because of our flood last spring, our place shines with newness right now (new carpet, new hardwood, etc.) It really is a great house, but, with Emmelyn it is feeling quite cramped and now that feeling will only increase. The good thing is we can easily and happily stay here for another couple of years if we don't get the right offer. It's kind of exciting to research where we might go next! Yes, we realize this means we're probably staying in Utah for a bit longer. What can we say, we like it here. We checked out our first open house on Saturday. We're working on making our house "photograph ready" for the listing and trying to get rid of stuff we don't need.
We are still working on getting Emmelyn's days and nights figured out. Somedays it goes great, some days it doesn't. We are enjoying watching her play each day. She's becoming more vocal and more interactive everyday. She enjoys bathtime, now, and I feel like we're getting a bedtime routine that she perhaps understands (until 1 or 2 a.m. hits and then she wakes up like it's 8 a.m.). Oh well, I think we'll eventually figure this out.

Emmelyn's 2-month checkup
Emmelyn had her 2-month checkup at Dr. Morgan's office on Oct. 13. She is a growing girl, weighing in at 11 pounds, 10.5 ounces. Any worries about her being small after being born at 37 weeks have been officially wiped out. She went from being in the 10th percentile for weight to the 75th! She now is 22.5 inches long, up from 19.5 inches at birth. Her height puts her in the 50th percentile. I forget what her head circumference was, but she is developing just fine in that area.
Em did not enjoy her shots. Not only did she have to get poked with a needle, but the room was cold and it was time to eat --the combination that turns our sweet Emmelyn into a crabby monster. Once she had a bottle, she was OK, but later in the evening she had her first fever and was very fussy. The doctor said that is normal. She had some baby pain reliever and today is doing better, but has been very sleepy after being up so much of the night crying.
We're getting a few more smiles each day, but they are hard to catch on camera. Here are a few attempts.

Playing with toys
Emmelyn has become much more alert during the day. She's also paying closer attention to the mobiles in her crib and on her lamb swing. She can grip rattles and other toys for a short time.
Emmelyn turns 2-months-old!
Emmelyn will be 9-weeks-old on Tuesday, and that means her 2-month doctor's appointment is right around the corner. We're anxious to see how much she has grown. She seemed to outgrow her size newborn clothes overnight at about the 7-week mark. She is now comfortably fitting into size 3-month clothing and getting to check out that part of her wardrobe. I am glad she's got a closet full of clothes --somedays, she goes through several outfits and so she puts everything to use. I have friends who say their babies outgrew some outfits before they could wear them. Not our Emmelyn! She must really like clothes --that must be why she spits up so much, so she can make sure to try on all of her outfits. :-)
We thought we finally had our day/night mix-up situation under control, but she threw us a curveball and stayed up until 4 a.m. again last night. That means we're all not not getting rolling until 1 p.m. today. We're hopeful to keep her up for most of the afternoon and perhaps we can get her to be sleeping at night again. She was sleeping from midnight until 6 a.m. for a couple days, which was awesome. We're also working on getting her adjusted to a little more formula in preparation for my return to work. We switched to something that is supposed to be easier on her tummy, but we're still waiting to see if it will do the trick.
Em got to see Grandma Sue and Grandpa Jerry a second time when they squeezed in a side trip to Salt Lake at the end of September when they traveled to Denver on business. As always, Em was super spoiled and did not like that Grandma was not there to hold her all day when Grandma left! Now it is back to her lamb swing and bouncy chair for a some of the day when mom needs to cook or get the laundry done.
Salt Lake City is beautiful at this time of year, and Emmelyn has been getting out for walks everyday. I've slowly worked my way up to walking 3 miles every day or every other day --getting back to exercising like I used to after a c-section has been more painful than I expected. Santa plans to bring Em a jogging stroller for Christmas, so that should help keep me on track next spring! She'll be big enough to start in it next February/March, so if it's nice weather, perhaps we'll be going for some short runs by then.
We also took Em on the Alpine Loop to look at the leaves. She went for a short hike in the Baby Bjorn at the Alpine Summit.
Emmelyn gets to meet Grandpa Rob and Grandma Wendy in a couple weeks. After that, she'll meet some more family when we return to Moorhead for her baptism at the end of November. She'll be baptized with her cousin Tessa, so it is sure to be a special day.
